Colombo RC 73 Spindle Repair Case Study

Upon receiving the Colombo RC 73 spindle for repair, an initial reading of the spindle drawbars pull force showed it was lower than what is recommended for this machine. Because the bearings were clearly burnt up, our spindle technicians decided to not do an initial test run of the RC 73. After disassembling the spindle, the grease lubricated bearings were found to be contaminated, because the spindles seals and o-rings were worn. The spindle motor was tested and found to be damaged. The motor was rewound with new lead lines.  Several surfaces on the spindle were found to be worn beyond specification, including the rear housing bore and the tool taper of the shaft, which were chrome and ground to factory specifications. Two new replacement sensors were provided by the customer, to ensure the spindle functioned properly. Once all components were repaired and acquired, New Precision Ceramic Ball Bearings were used in the rebuilding of the spindle. One of our skilled Spindle Technicians then balanced and test ran the RC 73 spindle for four hours, to make sure the quality of the rebuild is exceptional.
