Makino J4M Spindle Repair Case Study

makinospindlerepair

Motor City Repair received the Makino J4M Spindle after it had crashed at the customers facility during production. Our Spindle Technicians disassembled, inspected and quoted this spindle within 24 hours of receiving the spindle, which helped to expedite the repair. It was found that the spindle had failed due to coolant entering the inside of the spindle, causing the bearings to fail, as well as the motor to short. The motor short meant the motor needed to be rewound for it to run again. Chrome and Grind work had to be done to the Spindle Tool Taper, drawbar outer diameter, as well as the coolant union diameter of the spindle housing. Several components had to be ordered and replaced including the Drawbar Springs, Precision Steel and Ceramic Ball Bearings, O-rings, and Seals. One of our Spindle Techs rebuilt the J4M Spindle once all parts were received or reworked. The Spindle was then balanced and test ran for 4 hours on one of our several test stands. State of the art diagnostic equipment was used to fine tune this spindle, so it produced little to no vibrations. Before the Makino Spindle was shipped back to the customer, it was running as good as new.
