MACHINE TOOL SHAFTS & CHROME

Rebuilding CNC machine tool spindle shafts with hard chrome involves several steps. Here’s a general overview of the process:

  1. Disassembly: The first step is to disassemble the spindle shaft from the CNC machine tool. This typically involves removing any covers, bearings, and other components attached to the shaft.
  2. Inspection: Once the spindle shaft is disassembled, it needs to be thoroughly inspected for any damage or wear. This step helps identify any areas that require repair or rebuilding.
  3. Grinding: If there are any imperfections or wear on the spindle shaft, it may need to be ground down to remove the damaged material. Grinding ensures a smooth and uniform surface for the hard chrome plating process.
  4. Cleaning: After grinding, the spindle shaft is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. It is important to have a clean surface for the hard chrome plating to adhere properly.
  5. Masking: Next, certain areas of the shaft that should not receive the hard chrome plating, such as bearing journals or critical dimensions, are masked off. This ensures that only the desired areas receive the chrome plating.
  6. Acid etching: The spindle shaft is then treated with an acid etching solution to further clean and prepare the surface. Acid etching removes any remaining contaminants and provides a rough surface for the chrome plating to bond effectively.
  7. Chrome plating: The spindle shaft is submerged in a tank containing a chromium plating solution. An electric current is applied to the shaft, which causes the chrome to bond to the surface. The shaft acts as the cathode in the plating process.
  8. Polishing: Once the chrome plating is complete, the spindle shaft may undergo a polishing process to achieve the desired surface finish. Polishing can enhance the appearance and reduce any minor imperfections.
  9. Reassembly: After the hard chrome plating and polishing, the spindle shaft is reassembled with the necessary bearings, seals, and other components. The rebuilt shaft is then ready to be installed back into the CNC machine tool.

It’s important to note that the process described above is a general guideline, and specific details may vary depending on the machine shop or service provider performing the spindle shaft rebuilding. Additionally, it’s crucial to ensure that the rebuilding process adheres to industry standards and safety guidelines to guarantee the quality and performance of the rebuilt spindle shaft.
