German and Japanese CNC Machining Centers have dominated the precision machining landscape in regards to both Foreign and Domestic automakers in North America. One simply needs to walk the floors of Powertrain plants for GM, Honda, FCA, Ford, Hyundai, Toyota to see this first hand. Makino, Mag, Toyoda, Grob, NTC, Mazak and many other German and Japanese OEM’s abound. DMG Mori made a bold move and combined two great OEM’s (DMG and Mori Seiki) looking to harness the best of both worlds. Did they do it?
My question to you is which country do you think makes the best production cnc machining centers? In the past the German machines might have automatically got the slight nod due to being bigger, faster and having high tech motorized spindles with high HP. However, these machines are also very complicated with extreme engineering features. If strict and thorough preventative maintenance guidelines are not followed by well trained professional cnc maintenance technicians these machines can often be offline waiting for the OEM or specifically trained cnc techs to fix the issues. In contrast the recent past produced many Japanese machine tools that were simpler in design and this lent itself to machines more easily maintained and repaired, greatly minimizing machine down time. Of course Makino has always produced very high end complex cnc machining centers second to none for as long as I can remember. I used to refer to this debate as a tortoise and hare type match up. But in recent times companies such as Mazak, Toyoda, Okuma (not just lathes), NTC, and others come standard equipped with just as big, fast and complex motorized spindles as you can find anywhere.
Maybe DMG/Mori Seiki answered this question already by combining the precision machining excellence of both countries?
If you had to open up a machine shop tomorrow who would you put your money on?
No easy answer and many great options to be sure. But we’d love to hear you thoughts.
