How to EXTEND CNC Spindle Life

The CNC spindle truly is the heart and soul of the machine tool.

Signs of spindle issues include uncharacteristic noise, not able to rotate freely, visible cracks/breaks, and finish errors on your products.

Signs of a problem in your CNC machine:

Fixtures & Chucks

Sometimes the fixtures and chucks can not accurately hold the machined part. When this happens, vibrations and unwanted movement can happen which can ultimately lead to extreme damage.

Overheating

When you have a CNC machine that is almost constantly running, overheating may occur. Obviously, any basic function of a machining process will cause heat as a natural result, but proper care and maintenance are required to ensure the machine remains healthy overall. In order to try and prevent damage from happening, keeping your machine clean is extremely important. This includes eliminating excess metal chips/shavings from surrounding areas because they can contribute to overheating. Overheating can also be a result from running a machine at high RPMs as well.

Operator Error

Many times crashes and damage to the CNC machine result from operator error. This is usually due to inadequate training. Proper knowledge of the overall machine and machining processes are crucial to avoiding this type of problem.

Incorrect tools

In order to complete a successful machining process, the correct cutting tools and settings must be used. If this is not done properly, overall damage to the finished products may occur. Damage could include rough edges, burn marks throughout, and visible marks all around the piece. 

 

 

Tips to Lengthen Spindle Life

 

Tips for machine operators:

Understand the functions of the spindle as well as the ins and outs of the machine tool as a whole. For example, know the correct speeds to perform machining processes at.

Perform all processes with safety. It may even benefit you to speak with the spindle manufacturer or read the spindle manual (for the specific unit in the CNC) before operation to ensure correct use.

Know that temperature matters. If the spindle is running hot, that generally means there is an issue.

Make sure you are using the proper toolholder,

Clean the toolholders and spindle to help maintain precision and extend overall life.

Check the cooling system to make sure it is functioning properly.

Plan and follow through with preventative maintenance

 

Preventative maintenance

There are diagnostic tests that should be performed regularly to check on your spindle. This includes vibration analysis which measures velocity, acceleration, and displacement. Other maintenance tests include bearing checks, pullforce drawbar checks, and temperature checks. These tests can be performed by an experienced technician. Preventative maintenance tests like this can give good indication of when your spindle might need to be repaired.
