Ceramic vs Steel Bearings Blog

First, before we discuss the differences between ceramic and steel bearings, we must understand the role of a bearing.

Bearings reduce friction by providing smooth rollers (metal balls) and a smooth metal surface for them to slide against. The balls “bear” the load, which allows the CNC spindle to rotate smoothly.

Differences between Ceramic & Steel

Ceramic bearings provide higher quality heat resistance and corrosion while maintaining better dimensional stability and lower density. This allows for higher speed usage.

According to Ortech Ceramics, “Ceramic balls are about 40% as dense as steel. This means less centrifugal force is developed on the bearings resulting in suppression of heat generation between the balls and outer ring. The result is superior high-speed performance and they can operate at higher speeds.” Ceramic bearings also have a smoother finish than their steel counterparts.

What Are Angular Contact Bearings?

Angular contact ball bearings found in CNC spindles are where the inner- and sometimes outer-races are relieved. They allow the axial load carrying capacity to increase for higher metal removal rates with extended spindle life by achieving higher operational speeds (rpm) and better endurance.

ARE YOUR SPINDLE BEARINGS RATED FOR OPTIMAL USE AT THE RPM YOU RUN YOUR MACHINE TOOL SPINDLE?

First, ask around the industry of other end users who run identical make and model machine tools you own. Do not trust only one source. You may not get the most accurate answer from those that sold you your machine tool or designed your spindle.

Next, do not guess. Contact an expert and get actual documentation. Ask for proof via Failure Analysis Reports with digital photographs and video of your actual spindle.

Last, ask your spindle supplier do they offer upgrades to your spindle design. Because if they do not, we do. In many cases, our team at Motor City Spindle Repair can help to extend the life of your machine tool spindles. This can be done easily with a change in bearing configuration.
