Different Grinding machines
Before we look at the different types of CNC grinding machines, we first must understand what a grinding machine actually does. Simply put, a CNC grinding machine is a machine tool that uses a grinding wheel in order to accurately remove material on a metallic workpiece. It uses the process of ‘cutting’ in order to do this. Grinding machines are most commonly used for machining workpieces aka parts.
There are different types of CNC grinding machines that perform various functions.
Let’s dive in deeper and look at a few!
ID Grinding Machine
ID stands for internal grinding. The process itself is known as inside diameter grinding, bore grinding, or inner diameter grinding.
In this video, final small part ID grinding is performed:
OD GRINDING MACHINE
OD stands for outside grinding. These machines grind the outside diameter of a cylindrical workpiece.
In this video, OD grinding is performed:
Cylindrical Grinder
This is also known as a centered OD grinder. The workpiece is fixtures between two centers and is rotated by a drive mechanism.
Universal Grinder?
A universal Grinder performs both ID and OD grinding separately (one after the other). These units are seen in many tool rooms because they are typically used to create low-volume parts. The individual ID and OD grinding machines are used to create high-volume parts.
In this video, we will learn more about Universal Grinding capabilities:
